The Power of One Essay

Last Term we've studied some film techniques and watched the movie The Power of One and write an essay about it, so here's my short writing about it.

The Power of One

During the harrowing time of apartheid, a lot of injustices were served to the black population of South Africa. In the film The Power of One, directed by John Avildsen, the scene where Sergeant Borman forces Geel Piet to eat donkey excrement paints a vivid picture of the ill-treatment towards black people. The following techniques are used in this scene: diegetic sound, camera angles and shots, and dialogue. These film techniques helped convey this important idea and caused the scene to have a strong impact on the audience.

Firstly, John Avildsen makes a decision of putting a piece of background music on top of the foreground’s diegetic music as it uplifts the atmosphere in contrast with the scene. He did this to show how Black Africans are contented on what they have and be happy about it. This creates a very atmospheric scene and has a good balance that makes the film interesting.

Feedback to myself:

One thing that I am proud of in this essay is I started writing my essay even though I wasn't here most of the time.
Next time, I could work on this essay at home as well as using online tools like Grammarly and read-write to proofread my essay.
One thing that I enjoyed learning about the film was the different techniques because I didn't know that there are many more film techniques than I thought. What I found Challenging about learning this film is that as soon as we finished watching the film, we are asked to write an essay. One thing I learned that I will use the next time I write an essay is to know all the aspect of the task that you are writing about so that you'll know what to include onto your essay. What I am wondering about is how I could be more provident in composing my writing.

Children of Blood and Bone

A message I take from this scene is how people are so demanding that they never appreciate their belongings and look back to what they possess

A message from this scene is, Most of the people in modern times, especially today, they waste things that they know not of that are important onto something that makes them happy, however, they don't think of the consequences.

A message I received from this scene is that when you, keep a secret from someone close to you, it mostly would turn into an argument because it can be hard to accept the truth that was kept to you. Sometimes, you make excuses to get away from their problems.

A message I take from this scene is people who matter to you the most have a much-emphasised word which can make you stronger every time you feel weak or whenever you go through a situation where you just need to be strong.

A message I take from this scene is what you see something bad doesn't necessarily mean bad, it's just the things that are presented to you are what you see most of the time but not the reason behind all of it.

_________________________________________________________________________________

A message I take from this scene is people should know what it's like to experience different sufferings instead of torturing them and being sorry afterwards.

_________________________________________________________________________________

A message I take from this scene is Amari's father believes that strength cometh from being hard to others while Binta thaught her that strength comes from within you and do the right things.

________________________________________________________________________________
12/08/2019

A message I take from this scene is people who did badly in the past can prove their self that they can be good again.

For me, I do trust inan because he proved himself that he is trustworthy and deserves a second chance.
People in real life deserves a second chance because maybe they did bad things at first because they didn't think straight and made wrong desitions.

A message I take from this scene is that with the help of the monarchy, they would be unstoppable and they could rule the whole orisha with magic. And the king would maybe change his thoughts about the majis'.

A message I take from this scene is peoples' death is important no matter what age they are but a child's' death is much important, like Zu and she is even a healer.

A message I take from this scene is there might be a reason on seran's doing and an unforgettable past which made him look bad.

_________________________________________________________________________________
20/08/2019

A message I take from this scene is seran's killings are so often that inan got used to it, but even so, the deaths of whom inan knows doesn't mean anything to him.

_________________________________________________________________________________
22/08/2019

A message I take from this scene is king seran's beliefs are so firm that he made his son inan do the same or at lease a similar decision between him and Zelie.

For me, I would compare and balance my beliefs and compromise what is not good.

A message I take from this scene is saran blanks the memories of people like inan so they become a "shell" of the person who they were.

Like in a war, people who fight for their country are like a "shell" because they don't hate the person they're killing but they kill them anyway because they are fighting for their country and don't have any choice.

I think people have choices, but it doesn't mean that they always have a choice, like the soldiers who fight for their country.

Reflection

In English, we have been doing some narrative writing for the past few weeks.

What new things have you learned?
Image result for narrative writingNew things I have learnt are the many ways to start a narrative. eg. Show don't tell and using sensory language to start a sentence.

How is this going to help you to be a better creative writer?
This helps a lot to make me a better writer because of the practice I do to achieve good writing, as well as the tasks given to improve my writing.

What activities did you enjoy from this unit of work? Why?
The activities that I enjoyed the most are the show don't tell and creating a protagonist, because it makes it a bit challenging, and I like to do things that are new and a bit challenging.

Which styles of learning work best for you?
The styles of learning that works best for me is when we are working silently, and are allowed to listen to music. I liked that style because it makes me focused more on my learning and it doesn't make me go off-track on my learning.

Setting activity 2: Setting as Backdrop

Here is a short example of a short scene:

  • The shoppers coursed through the streets like rats in a maze.
  • Kate craned her neck and spied a tiny patch of sky amidst the towering skyscrapers.
  • A brand new 2012 Porsche sped by and Kate whirled on her heels just in time to see it disappear around the corner of Lexington.

Here is my example:

  • The shoppers craned their neck and observed a gathering below.
  • A newly opened shop made people rushed like water through the falls.

Setting Activity (Sensory language)

Three different short opening scenes.

Example:

1. It was really busy, the heat flow through your body and the horns echoing through the city.

2. The clouds hover above as the snow falls to the ground and the wind starts to blow the coldness.

3. It was warm, the flowers bloom as they sprinkle their sweet scent.

"Show don't Tell"

Narrative opening using "show don't tell".

Here are My examples:

Lydia's face turned red as she walks and looks up to see the orange flame from her house.

In the middle of nowhere two girls were running as they look back to see the hideous hairy creature.

Tom's face suddenly turned red as he looks down and walks home carrying a box of items from his workplace.

Clair stopped and the crowd flooded to her as her face became puffy and red.

Julie sat down in tears while seeing his boyfriend walk away from her.

"Show don't Tell"

What do you think "show don't tell" means? In my opinion, I think it means describing something you saw/happen without telling it/how it happened.

Eg.

I looked up to see the buildings

The tears fell on Sarah's face.

She jumped up and down when she saw him.

The lake sparkled in beauty.

Creative Writing Reflection

In English, we have been learning about different ways to write. We were given five different writing activities, we choose different tasks to do depending on what we want to do first. I chose to do slam poetry first, then metaphors and similes, then language features, and lastly I did Haiku.

What things have I learnt?
I have learnt that a haiku is a Japanese short poetry and that the syllable should be 5,7,5.
I also learnt that sensory language includes all of your senses when you write.

How have I learned them?
I learned all these ways of writing by watching/reading things that are included in the slide and also by searching things up.

What activities, in particular, did you find interesting, enjoyable?
The activity that I found enjoyable was writing a haiku it was kind of hard at first but as I read through the examples and search some more online I found it quite easy.

Haiku

What is Haiku?

Sensory Language

The butterflies eat nectar as the bright sun illuminates the field. I inhaled the sweet scent of the flowers as the breeze flows through my body, while the whistling sound of the wind starts to become stronger, the children running around with their parents, dogs jump as they chase the green fluffy ball. I sat down as I concentrate my senses and relax

Slam Poetry

In English I watched some of the slam poetry, I watched the poetry about Matariki and I liked it because the way the speaker expressed the line he made and I like how he put his feelings in creating his own slam poetry. Also, I liked when he talked about modern society, unlike the previous generations when there were no phones, people used to communicate with their neighbours. People nowadays don't even listen to someone speaking at the front, they are just busy clicking and liking something on Facebook, he said "I can't even get a tihei mauri ora, people are too busy tryna click like or snap and clap, what's up with that? "
