Alexander the Great (primary sources writing practice)

Alexander the great has burned down Persepolis. However, there are a few arguments that say that He did not burn it down on purpose. Some say that he burnt it down on purpose. In my opinion, however, I think that he has burned it down not on purpose. He was too drunk when he did it which means that he wasn't in the right mind when he burned it down. According to Plutarch, the fire started at the end of the drinking party. During the party, there came a Greek prostitute gave a speech that encouraged Alexander to burn down Persepolis.

Understanding the events in Alexander's journey, a reliable primary source is necessary. Knowing Alexander, there can be different interpretations of men about him. There are sources that are biased or inaccurate. Sadly, there is no writing from his close friends and his family has stayed. Most of the stories written about Alexander were written long after his death; This type of writing is called a "Secondary" source. There are also histories that have been written earlier and are called "Primary" sources. Secondary sources may be biased in some way which highly depends on their point of view as historians. It can also depend on how subjective he can be regarding the information he was collecting. Moreover, it can also depend on why he was writing about him.

There are five main sources for studying Alexander the great; Arrian, Plutarch, Diodorus Siculus, Curtius Rufus and Justin. These sources may vary in different writings about Alexander. Also, these writers have written different stories about Alexander's life.

Alexander the Great (A military Genius)

Alexander the great is a military genius because he used different tactics to battle against their enemies. Alexander has equipped his troops with long 'Sarissa'. He has fought in a 'Phalanx' formation.

This is what a Phalanx formation looks like:

This formation is able to swap troops when the ones at the front get tired; Together with their long Sarissa, they are able to reach the enemies without them being in contact with them. Not only that, the people at the back are also able to attack and combat the enemies.

There were also the Thracian Peltasts. They are the archers, slingers and javelins. They are only lightly armoured.

Light troops are similar to the Thracian Peltasts, they are also archers for alexander.

The Companion Cavalry are the elite troops. They consist of 8 Squadrons who make up Macedonian nobles. They charge in a wedge-shaped formation.

Classics

What is propaganda?

For me, propaganda is a type of power misuse to try and force people to believe some things which in some cases aren't true.

 Who was Aristobulus?

Aristobulus was the first Hasmonean king of Judea. He was a king from 104 BCE until his death in 103 BCE.

Alexander the great

In classics, we have started with the topic of Alexander the Great. However, my knowledge of Alexander the Great is limited. That is why I have made some notes about Alexander the Great.

Here are my notes about him:

Alexander the Great was considered great at the time because he was one of the greatest militaries at the time. His father Philip the second was the one that introduced and taught him in the military. In addition to that, He has named 20 cities after himself. Not only that but he was also tutored by one of the greatest Phillisoper of the time Aristotel in literature.

Shockingly, Poseidon has made his wife a hollow cow so that she could be able to hide to get closer to the white bull. Surprisingly, after a few months, she gave birth to a son, half-man, half-bull. where she named him Asterion.

Horrible Histories Book

In the book, Horrible histories, a different viewpoints of individuals are shown. The book portrays that in every situation, there are both right and wrong ways. It even says that "teachers will try to tell you there are 'right' and 'wrong' answers even if there really aren't". This is why history can be horrible sometimes because from a different standpoint, history can be viewed as a bad thing or a good thing.

Greek Vase

In classics, we have been learning about the Olympians and their domains. I have turned my focus on the Greek god Poseidon. Poseidon is the god of the sea who has a very bad temper.

Here is a picture of the vase I have made using photoshop. I have added different layers in photoshop to create this vase.

Currently, in classics, we are learning about the different olympian gods. We are tasked to choose how we want to portray our knowledge of the olympian gods. I have chosen to show my understanding by making a vase drawing.

Here is an example of what I want to do for my vase.
