Defining Pathos, Logos and Ethos

Pathos is an appeal to emotion. It is used for attempting to evoke an emotional response on people. For example on mattress ads, they show a picture of a person having back pain to simulate the pain of buying a "wrong" mattress.

Logos is an appeal to logic or reason. It is used to give you evidence and statistics you need to understand what the product does. For instance in juice advertisements, they say that their juice contains 75% of vitamin C your body needs every day.

Ethos is an appeal to credibility or character. It is used to make the company appeal more credible, reliable and honest. For instance, "Nine out of ten dentists agree that Crest is better than any other brand".
